אזרחות פורטוגזית ניתן לרכוש באמצעות טפסים שונים, כפי שנקבע בחקיקה הקיימת כיום. קבלת אזרחות פורטוגזית מתורגמת לא רק לרכישת כל הזכויות הקבועות בחוקת הרפובליקה הפורטוגזית, אלא גם לרכישת אזרחות האיחוד האירופי, המאפשרת חופש תנועה והתבססות בכל מדינה חבר באיחוד.

אזרחות פורטוגזית בנישואין (או באיחוד אזרחי)
Foreign nationals married to a Portuguese citizen, or living in a legally recognised civil union (יוניאו דה פקטו) with a Portuguese citizen, for more than 3 years may apply for Portuguese citizenship.
The declaration must be made while the marriage or civil union is still in force, and the applicant must not fall under any legal grounds for opposition (such as lack of effective links to the Portuguese national community or security concerns).

Portuguese citizenship can be obtained by people born abroad who are:
- children of a Portuguese mother or father; or
- grandchildren of a Portuguese citizen of origin who has not lost Portuguese nationality,
provided that they declare that they wish to be Portuguese and, in the case of grandchildren, demonstrate effective links to the Portuguese national community.

Anyone adopted by a Portuguese citizen can acquire Portuguese citizenship. In most cases, nationality is acquired automatically when the adoption becomes final.
For adoptions carried out under previous legislation (before the current Nationality Law entered into force), an additional declaration may be required.

Foreign nationals may acquire Portuguese citizenship by naturalization if they:
- are at least 18 years old (or legally emancipated);
- have been legally resident in Portugal for the minimum period required by law (currently 10 years for most third‑country nationals and 7 years for EU and Portuguese‑speaking country nationals); and
- meet integration requirements (such as sufficient knowledge of the Portuguese language and society) and do not have a serious criminal record or pose a security or defence risk.
This is the most common route for holders of residency permits such as the Golden Visa or passive income visas.
Persons born in Portugal to foreign parents may acquire Portuguese nationality either as nationality of origin or by declaration, particularly where, at the time of birth, one parent has been legally resident in Portugal for at least 5 years.
אזרחות לקטינים (או בלתי מוגבלים)
Persons under 18 years of age or incapacitated, whose mother or father acquired Portuguese nationality after their birth, may also acquire Portuguese nationality by declaration made on their behalf, provided they have effective links to the Portuguese national community and none of the legal grounds for opposition apply.
אזרחות על ידי השתייכות לקהילה פורטוגזית בחו"ל
Members of organised communities of Portuguese descent abroad may be eligible for Portuguese citizenship when they are descendants of Portuguese citizens and can demonstrate effective links to the Portuguese national community.
Applications are submitted to the Portuguese authorities and assessed on a case‑by‑case basis, taking into account both descent and the strength of those links.
אזרחות עבור שירותים רלוונטיים למדינה הפורטוגזית או לקהילה הפורטוגזית
Persons over 18 years of age may request Portuguese citizenship if they have rendered, or are called to render, relevant services to the Portuguese State.
In these exceptional cases, the ממשלה may grant nationality even where normal residence or language requirements are waived.
